Initial Course of Peridontal Treatment and Maintenance
THE NAME OF YOUR CONDITION
Inflammatory Periodontal Disease.
1. Acute or Chronic Gingivitis.
2. Chronic Periodontitis.
3. Aggressive Periodontitis. (Early Onset/ Rapidly Progressive)
4. Localised Juvenile Periodontitis.
5. Systemically Related Periodontitis
INITIAL THERAPY
The initial course of treatment will aim to eliminate as much harmful bacteria (plaque) as possible over a short period.By following the maintenance regime on a daily basis, in conjunction with regular scaling and review appointments, we aim to control and prevent further periodontal destruction.
21 DAY FULL MOUTH DISINFECTION REGIME
MORNING
Tooth brushing with toothpaste for 2 minutes (use timer).
Followed by tongue brushing (with toothpaste).
Followed by interproximal brushes/floss (used dry).
Rinse mouth thoroughly with water..
Now rinse with 10 ml chlorhexidine mouthwash for 1 minute.
Finally, rinse brushes, then dip in chlorhexidine mouthwash and leave to dry.
EVENING
Rinse with Chlorhexidine mouthwash (1 minute). Toothbrushing for 2 minutes (use chlorhexidine mouthwash NOT toothpaste). 10 ml should be mixed with 10 ml water to complete this regime
Followed by tongue brushing with chlorhexidine. Followed by interproximal brushing/flossing (dipped in chlorhexidine mouthwash).
Then use interspace end tufted brush beneath the gum line dipped in chlorhexidine.
Finally rinse again with chlorhexidine (1 minute).
Then rinse brushes, dip in chlorhexidine and leave to dry.
NB: DO NOT DRINK TEA, COFFEE, RED WINE OR SPICY FOODS FOR 1 HOUR BEFORE OR AFTER USING CHLORHEXIDINE MOUTHWASH TO HELP PREVENT STAINING
MAINTENANCE FOLLOWING INITIAL THERAPY
MORNING
Toothbrushing for 2 minutes (use timer)
Followed by interproximal brushing /floss (used dry)
Followed by tongue brushing (with toothpaste)
Finally rinse brushes and leave to dry.
EVENING
As for the morning but allow extra time, in 3-4 minutes when Toothbrushing.
Note: whilst following the maintenance programme only use chlorhexidine as a 50/50% solution with water on interproximal brushes if you notice any bleeding when brushing, for no longer than 1 week.
TOOTHBRUSHING TECHNIQUE
Charters - Short oscillating movements starting at the gum line and gently brushing onto the tooth.
Modified Bass - Angled 45 into the gum line, with short side to side movements, then roll the brush onto the tooth.
Roll - Roll brush from the gum onto the teeth.
